Rappahannock County, our home, is located one hour west and a world apart from Washington, DC.  The joys of the region include miles of magnificent countryside, a slower pace of life, beauty all around, people who wave as they drive by and no traffic.  There are no shopping malls or chain stores, no billboards and no traffic lights.  Rappahannock County is filled with world class artists and musicians,  4 theaters, fine dining,  award winning wineries,  unique homes and great people who appreciate what they have … and do their best to preserve it.                                                                                                                                               Drive into Rappahannock at night and you will see no street lights, just stars and moon.

A place of mountains, foothills, farms, serene places and magical vistas enhanced by the headwaters of seven rivers flowing from the Shenandoah National Park on the western boundary.   Springs and streams are abundant.  Wildlife abounds.  These are the natural things.  But there is more!….

The Arts are alive, award winning wineries flourish, organic and niche farmers populate the landscape beside the larger cattle farms, and all about is a sense of community.  Amazing opportunities abound at the Castleton Arts FestivalThe Theatre at Washington Virginia and other venues such as the Rappahannock Artists Tour sponsored by the local arts association and the local farm tour.  Fine dining is available at The Inn at Little WashingtonThe Blue Rock Inn and other nearby establishments.  B&B lodgings cater to tourists.  Check out our county TOURISM site!

And finally, don’t forget our many non-profits, from Headwaters, the county education foundation, to the local Conservation Alliance and our Environmental Protection League.  This is just the beginning of a long list, too numerous to mention here.  More links are provided on a separate page.

In short, Rappahannock County and it’s surrounding environs are a great community to live and generally become involved in something manageable yet larger than one’s self.  But I wax poetic, perhaps nostalgic, yet it is a place of poetry and nostalgia.  But for the forethought of those in local government and environmentally sensitive farmers who created our strong zoning ordinance and Comprehensive Plan, viewable via the county government site, this would not exist today.
